As Anna and Michael headed inside, Ironhide did indeed hear his niece's words, then heard Speed Demon's sleepy words and held her all the closer. He liked the idea of being a father one day, but he never had the chance and thought he never would. He and Ratchet were close friends and had been lovers when they were young, rekindling that relationship during the exodus from Cybertron, but they had never bonded. Then there was Barricade, well before the war, lost to him after the younger mech betrayed him and tried to murder him, or so Ironhide thought. Now the Decepticon scout was in their brig, and as he thought about their encounter earlier, he started to wonder what was really going on, why he hadn't fought back when Ironhide attacked him to get Anna away from him. Was he really that Energon starved? Was he dying? The thought sent a twinge of remorse through the burly mech that Ironhide had never expected, and it made him wonder. He looked at Speed Demon in his arms and cradled her close. "Sleep now, lil one. I'll look after ya, I promise." he whispered softly and carried her to the Autobots living quarters and into his own quarters so she could sleep, sitting there on the berth with her cradled in his arms with her head resting against his chest so she could hear his Spark thrumming softly, rocking her gently until she fell asleep. Once the young bot was sound asleep, he laid down with her cradled close, letting her rest in his arms, smiling softly at her for a while.
His thoughts drifted to the Decepticon they had in the brig then, and after a while he simply could not stand the agony of not knowing. Once and for all he had to learn the truth, somehow, and the more he thought about it, the more restless he got. He rolled onto his back quietly so he wouldn't disturb Speed Demon, letting his interface cable connect to his own port under his abdominal armor trying to soothe the tension and stress he was feeling, venting softly. But the quiet release didn't help ease his processor and he finally slipped away, letting the young bot sleep in his quarters as he headed out to have a talk with Barricade. He needed answers, and this was probably the only chance Ironhide would ever get to find out the truth, if Barricade would even deign to tell him the truth.
